Charles J. Leyden

Charles J. “Chuck” Leyden, 81, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 in Decatur Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.

Chuck was born December 3, 1936 in Independence, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Gwendolyn (Lahner) Leyden. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Chuck continued his military service in the National Guard retiring after thirty-one years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church where he served as an usher, the Moose Lodge, and served as a volunteer with Catholic Charities. Chuck married his high school sweetheart Joanne A. Mihatovic on August 4, 1956 in Westmont, Illinois. They shared over sixty-one years together.

Chuck leaves behind his wife Joanne, children Jeffrey (Jennifer) Leyden of Decatur, Julie Miller of Decatur, Jennifer (Bill) Godfrey of Decatur, and John (Jennifer) Leyden of Madison, Wisconsin, brothers Phillip (Cheryl) Leyden and Richard Leyden, grandchildren Megan, Sam, Matthew, Jayne, Scott, David, Austin, and Alyssa, and great-grandchildren Nate, Eliana, Andrew, Isabella, Kennedy, Layton, and Elle.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas Leyden, and granddaughter Rachel.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the Primrose community and staff for all of their compassion and support.

Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Chuck’s life will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, February 21, 2018 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 407 E. Eldorado Decatur, with Rev. John Burnette, celebrant. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday, February 20, 2018 in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be in North Fork Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

  1. Charlie was one of the first men thar I met when I joined the guard in 1973, and I never met a more knowligible or ldedicated man. I was proud to call him a friend.

  2. I knew Charlie as a helicopter expert and a really good man. I learned a lot from him, both about helicopters and about life. My condolences to his family.
