John William Eckert

Birth Date: April 30, 1933
Death Date: September 11, 2018

John William Eckert, 85, of Decatur, IL, returned to his heavenly home on September 11, 2018 after a valiant battle with illness. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.

John was born on April 30, 1933 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; to John A. and Genevieve (Smith) Eckert.

John was blessed with a large and loving family. He married his best friend and love, Lilly (Hess) Eckert, on June 8, 1957 in New Holstein, Wisconsin. He and Lilly raised five children with patience, love, laughter and humility. He taught them to respect others and enjoy life.

John had a strong work ethic, as he worked his way up from a sales representative to a Branch Manager with Nabisco Brands. After 28 years with Nabisco, he decided to retire to spend more time with his family. He continued to work part time for Pillsbury keeping himself active for many more years.

John was a dedicated Marine and 4th Degree Knight. He was very proud of his service with the United States Marine Corps and his fellowship with the Knights of Columbus.

He was a loyal fan of the Green Bay Packers; as he patiently watched them come back to win again sitting in his big green chair. He loved sitting on the front porch or working in his yard watching friends and family stroll by. John always provided a friendly smile and a wave. He also enjoyed spending time with his buddies for a cup of coffee and great conversation at McDonalds.

John is survived by his wife, Lilly, his brother, Bill of Sussex WI, his children, John (Cheryl), Kathy (Steve Hamilton), Kim (John Karl), Karen (Tim Devereux) and Jim (Laurie), 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Joyce (Bscherer) and four great grandchildren, who are with him now.

A prayer service will be held at 4pm on Friday, September 14th, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 15th starting at 11am with Father John Eckert as celebrant. A reception will follow in the Enrichment Center after the mass with burial to follow the luncheon.

The family wants to thank Father John Burnett, Father Rick Welton and Dr. Dennis Rodemacher for their many years of kindness and friendship to Dad. They also want to thank the staff in the Intermediate Care Department at Decatur Memorial Hospital, especially John, Brett, Sheila, Crystal, Justin and Al for their loving care.

Memorials can be made in his name to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the Millikin Homestead. The family gratefully accepts all the prayers you wish to offer. Please remember happy thoughts of John, our loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Moran and Goebel Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of John.  Condolences may be left to his family at www.moranandgoebel.com.
