Nikki Nicholas

Birth Date: November 2, 1946
Death Date: November 2, 2017

On November 2, 2017, Nikki Nicholas, a talented, strong, feisty, & beautiful woman won her battle against cancer. Someone this brave who fought this long and hard should never be considered to have lost. We have lost a faithful friend, wise mentor, devoted sister, loving wife, dear aunt, fearless mother, & amazing grandmother. She inspired us to live life with zest, see humor in life’s adventures, find a positive in the toughest of days, travel the world, find beauty in the little things, and be grateful for all God has provided. Today she is up and moving again. She got her wings on her birthday and as she would say, “Here we go!”

Nikki was born in Springfield, Illinois on November 2, 1946 and raised in Williamsville, Illinois. She attended the University of Illinois and married Everett Nicholas on August 24, 1968. She is survived by her husband, her four children, James and wife Lily, Kathryn and husband James, Wesley and wife Wendy, Susan and husband Nicholas, nine grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her sister Pamela Lucas and husband David.

A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 11, 2017, at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Church. In lieu of flowers the family would greatly appreciate your making a contribution to either Gods Shelter of Love, 929 North Union, Decatur Illinois 62522 or DMH Hospice, 2300 North Edward, Decatur, Illinois 62522.

The family would like to express its profound appreciation to Dr. James Wade, Becky Parini and Marti Johnson who made Nikki’s courageous battle as comforting as possible and who provided the family with untold support and care.

  1. Dearest Everett, thank you so much for leaving me a message about Nikki. Tears flooded my eyes when I heard you say she had passed away. I met Nikki at Circle Urban Ministries back in the late 1980s, and she was a breath of fresh air for me. This was my first real job out of college, and I also was newly married. Nikki made me feel confident and loved. She was a good listener and I loved her laughter. She and I shared an appreciation for classic books. At the time she was reading Franny and Zoey by J.D. Salinger. I checked out a copy at the library and couldn't put it down. Nikki had an effervescent personality, and she was a truly genuine and spiritual Christian in a sort of unconventional way, in the best sense of the word. I was always so glad to see her whenever she was at Circle. We enjoyed talking and laughing together in my little office on the 2nd floor. I can only imagine how much you must miss her! Nikki had such a loving heart, and I am grateful to have had her in my life at a time when I needed confidence from a mentor. I regarded her as a role mode. I will never forget Nikki, and I can only hope that I was half as much of a blessing to her as she was to me. I will be praying for you and your family.

    Our love, Cynthia Nordberg

  2. Nick, Jay, Wes, Katie, and Susan–you all have been in my thoughts since Callie gave me the sad news about my dear friend. She was a kind and thoughtful friend and although we had lost touch by moving to different parts of the country, I always put Nikki on my "best and most treasured friend" list. We spent a good bit of time together which let me discover what a sweet person she was. She loved you all so much and I know how proud she must be of you all. Please know how very sorry I am that she is no longer with you but you know you'll see her again. Much love to you all, Grace Lewis

  3. Condolences to Kate and Gabby and family. Ive not known many to pass right in their birthday. May she walk with angels. Love to both you ladies.

  4. I was shocked when Kerry told me of Nikki's death. I feel terrible not to have known sooner. I would have come to the service for her. She WAS an ANGEL. I'll treasure her as a true friend and surrogate mother to high schoolers when my daughter was close friends to Katie. She made the teens feel welcome in her home and so many basked in her smile around the kitchen table. Kerry loved her, and I admired her for her loving nature with everyone. Such precious memories. I wish there were more days in the weeks, hours in the day so that I could have visited her before she passed. I can only imagine the loss you, her family, are feeling. God be with you all in your grief. Rejoice in the pearl you had for a mother and wife.
