Decatur – Thomas Leo Aldrich, 85, of Decatur, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 with family by his side.
Tom was born November 2, 1931 in Akron, OH, the son of George and Bernadine (McGuire) Aldrich. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1955. During his Naval service, he was a pilot of both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. As a test pilot Tom was part of a team that flew the first night mission of a helicopter over a body of water to test navigation. He also flew search and rescue missions and made his way around the world flying on and off aircraft carriers before receiving his honorable discharge from active duty in 1959.
In private life, Tom worked as an engineer at Firestone plants in Ohio, Canada and Illinois through Production and Plant Manager positions until he retired in 1994.
He liked to swim and golf, and was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. He married Patricia Mills and she preceded him in death in 1987. He then married Ardith Wehling November 24, 1988 in Decatur.
Surviving is his wife Ardith; sons: Timothy Aldrich of FL, Michael Aldrich of MI, Gregory (Michelle Lange) Aldrich of OR, Terrence (Cecille) Aldrich of IL and Matthew (Dana) Aldrich of IL; daughter, Pamela (Keith) Johnson of TX; twenty grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; stepson, Charles Turner of OH; stepdaughters: Anne (Bruce) Mardis of MO, Mary (Bradley) Rosencrans of MO, Kay (Donald) Thorp of IL and Jill Lloyd of NY; son-in-law, Allan Penwell of IL; brothers: Michael (Mary Alice) Aldrich of OH and James (Irene) Aldrich of IL; sister, Patricia Mascolo of OH; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patricia; daughter, Lori Stokes; grandson, Benjamin Turner; granddaughter, Chloe Aldrich; stepdaughter, Jan Penwell and son-in-law, Kermit Stokes.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate his life will be at 10 AM Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Rev. Richard Weltin, celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Monday, October 23, 2017, in the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home; vigil prayer service at 4:30 PM. Burial will take place in Macon County Memorial Park with military rites. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.
