Albert Dean Goodbred's Obituary
Albert Dean Goodbred, 80 of Mount Zion died Sunday February 13, 2005 in Springfield Memorial Medical Center after a long illness.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be 10 am Wednesday February 16, 2005 in Grace United Methodist Church 901 North Main Street, Decatur, where Pastor Sara Isbell will officiate. Visitation will be held Tuesday February 15, 2005 from 5-8 pm and one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery with Military Rites. Memorials are suggested to be given to the Grace United Methodist Church or Mount Zion Foundation for Quality Education.
Albert was born July 9, 1924 in Tonica, IL the son of Albert Willard and Cecil Iva Boyd Goodbred. He served his country in the United States Navy as a Boatswain’s Mate Third Class on the USS Belle Grove LSD-2 and USS Kenneth Whiting. He received military honors including Victory Medal World War II, American Area, Asiatic Pacific Four Stars, he was honorably discharged February 15, 1946. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church Caterpillar Double Nickel Club, Caterpillar Retirees Club, Lion’s Club of Mount Zion, Moose Lodge #684, Founding member of the Mount Zion Swingsations Booster Club, Board Member of National Campers and Hikers Association, Past President Top Notch Camping Club, he was also a volunteer for Mount Zion Volunteer Fire Department, he was a member of American Legion Post #475 and volunteered for the Lion’s Club Bingo in Kingdom Hall. He worked for Caterpillar for over 34 years, retiring in 1987. He was an AVID Chicago Cubs Fan and Fighting Illini Basketball Fan, enjoyed gardening and camping. He married Phyllis Jean Williams on December 28, 1963 in Decatur, she survives.
Also surviving are his seven children, Larry A. Goodbred of Decatur, Greggory D. Goodbred of Decatur, Dale L. Goodbred of Morris, Christine R. Jerry Smith of Mount Zion, Cheri J. Robert Sorenson of Peru, IN, Jamie K. Tom Rigg of Dalton City, Laura I. Paul McKneight of Hilliard, OH; his brother, J. Elwin Goodbred of Tonica, IL and his mother in law, A. Evelyn Williams of Ramsey, IL. Twenty-one grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, many close relatives and friends.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, father-in-law, Russell Williams.
