Alvonzo Hodges' Obituary
Alvonzo Hodges peacefully departed this life on July 12, 2023 at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Al was a man of few words with a calm and patient demeanor. He had a sharp memory and loved to speak of his days growing up with his parents Aaron and Minnie (Blue) Hodges and eight siblings. He often spoke of growing up on the Southside of Decatur, fun times running track and cross county track with his brother Freddie and playing basketball at Eisenhower High School.
After high school Al attended Parkland College. Later he enlisted in the Air Force where he served as a Medic at the USAF Hospital – Medical Center at Chanute Air Force in Rantoul, IL. After military service, Al worked at Caterpillar Inc. for over 41 years. For leisure he was a “die hard Chicago Club Fan” and loved to play the lottery. His greatest joy came in June 2016 when he accepted Christ and was baptized by his son, Rev. Alfonso Hodges!
Al is survived by his wife of 14 years, Joyce Harper-Hodges who he loved dearly; children Rev. Alfonso (Margaret) Hodges, Sheila Hodges-Harper, Deandre (Rochelle) Harper, Taraez Harper, Mario Harper and Kameko Harper all of Decatur, Elder Mark (Abigail) Hodges of Chicago, Officer James (Kimberly) Hodges of Peoria IL and Adam Hodges of Charleston, SC; Sisters Doris Graham, Ollie Slaw, Kathy (Lonnie) Williams and Pamela (Rafael) Graham of Decatur, Wilma (Alfred) Carson of Milwaukee WI; Sister-in-Law Mary Hodges; 27 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Henry and Mary (Head) Hodges, John Henry and Willie (Read) Blue; brothers Aaron and Freddie Hodges, sister Loretta Hodges-McGee and grandson Antonio Canada.
Al was a cool guy. Rarely if ever showing displeasure or anger. All who knew him often said he was reserved, a bit shy with a quiet presence. We will miss his gentle nature and caring spirit.
A visitation for Alvonzo will be held on Friday, July 21.2023 from 10am to 12 pm at Moran and Goebel Funeral home. A funeral service will be held after the visitation and burial will take place at Butler National Cemetery directly after services.
