Annette was born on June 6, 1923 in Galt, Ontario, Canada to George and Frances (Schmidt) Hogan, the 2nd of their 5 children.
After graduation from Galt Collegiate Institute and Vocational School, Annette and her beloved sister Madeleine co-managed several diners in their hometown of Galt. In April 1951, August (Gus) Mormino, walked into Moffat’s Restaurant where Annette was working and introduced himself as the new starting pitcher for the Galt Terriers professional baseball team. After Gus finished his lunch and left the diner, Annette announced to her co-workers “Leave him alone girls…he’s mine”. On May 12, 1952, they married in Chicago, IL, where Gus completed his studies to become a Chiropractor.
Upon Gus’ graduation in 1953, they moved to Decatur, IL where Gus established his clinic, and Annette worked at an Insurance company until they started their family in 1958. While raising their three children, Annette was heavily involved with their activities while the kids attended St. Thomas Catholic Parish School. Annette was a Class Mother for one or more of her kids every year between 1964 and 1975, in addition to her participation in the parish Mothers Club. Annette also volunteered at Decatur Memorial Hospital’s snack bar throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. She especially enjoyed working the DMH booth at the annual Decatur Fun Fair.
While awaiting the arrival of grandchildren in her life, Annette took up several hobbies including: knitting, crocheting and ceramics. Annette became quite skilled at creating ceramic decorations for every Season & Holiday and she was especially proud of all of the ceramic Nativity scenes she crafted for family and friends.
Annette was preceded in death and will be met in Heaven by her husband, her parents, her sister Madeleine Hogan, her brothers Terry (Donna) Hogan, Denis (Janet) Hogan, and Alan (who died in infancy), her brothers-in-law Frank (Virginia) Mormino and Anthony Mormino.
Surviving are her children: Michael Mormino of Edwardsville, IL, Anthony (Ann Marie) Mormino of Yorkville, IL, and Kathryn (John) Sharkey of Wheaton, IL. Grandchildren: Haley Mormino (Michael Green), Jordan (Nick) Schlenke and Samantha Mormino; Madeleine, Alex and Nicholas Mormino; and Colin (Lauren) and Keely Sharkey.
Great-grandchildren: Lyla and Adelaide Green; Lucas and Sophia Schlenke. Annette is also survived by her sister-in-law Josephine Mormino, a host of nieces and nephews,
and cherished family friend, Ann Nation, to whom we’ll be forever grateful for everything she did for Mom.
Special thanks to Leslie Strohl, Chelsea Taylor and the staff at the Assisted Living Center at Primrose Retirement Community, and the staff of DMH Hospice Care.
While she loved her life in Decatur, Annette remained a proud Canadian citizen her entire life.
