Arnold Arthur Gross' Obituary
Arnold Arthur Gross, 89, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away November 28, 2024, at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Arnold was born in Decatur on January 1, 1935, the son of Arthur and Martha (Reich) Gross. He married Elizabeth Howenstine on February 14, 1960, and they enjoyed forty years together until her death in 2000. Arnold managed the Eldorado Bowl in Decatur for 30 years. After that, he managed Custom Trophies until his retirement. Arnold was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bulls, especially Michael Jordan. He loved watching all college sports. The Special Olympics were a favorite interest of his, and he generously donated all the trophies that were awarded to the athletes. He supported LSA sports by being a scorekeeper for the basketball and baseball teams. Arnold was an accomplished bowler and was inducted into the Decatur Bowling Hall of Fame in 1996.
Arnold is survived by his daughters Diane (Richard) Doty of Decatur and Susan Gross of Decatur; sister-in-law Judy Gross; and brother-in-law Benjamin Howenstine. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother Delmar Gross.
Visitation for Arnold will be from 9am to 11am on Wednesday, December 4, at St. John’s Lutheran Church and will be followed by a funeral service at 11am. Burial in Fairlawn Cemetery in Decatur will follow the service. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.moranandgoebel.com.
