Barbara Ann Dobbs' Obituary
Barbara A. Dobbs, 87, of Decatur, departed this life at 11:50 a.m., April 30, 2017, at Mason Point in Sullivan, IL.
Barbara was born August 12, 1929, in Decatur, IL to Edgar and Hazel (Smiser) Bertsch. She married Donald E. Dobbs on October 19, 1947, in Decatur, IL. He passed away on February 12, 1992. She graduated from Stephen Decatur High School in 1947 and Richland Community College in 1978.
After being a stay at home mom for sixteen years, she returned to work as a teaching assistant at Progress Resource Center. Later, after receiving her Associate Degree, she became a teacher at Progress and continued in that capacity with Macon Resources, retiring in 2002. Upon her retirement she was awarded a certificate of recognition for outstanding public service by the City Council of Decatur for her many years of dedication to serving others.
She was a member of 3rd Evangelical United Brethren and later Christ United Methodist Church. She enjoyed life being a mother, grandmother, a teacher of disabled children, playing softball in her younger years, sports of all kinds, writing poetry, and helping others whenever she could.
Barbara leaves behind her son, Ron (Jan) Dobbs; granddaughter, Alison (Kip) Chumbley; sister, Norma (Leroy) Wilmirth; and brother, Bill (Pat) Bertsch.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; sisters, Pearl Radcliff, Elsie Eilers, Geneva Burns; and brother, Roger Bertsch.
The family would like to thank the staff at Mason Point and Lincoln Land Hospice for the care and comfort they provided our mother in her final months.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017, at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home with the Rev. Tina Miller, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Macon Resources 2121 Hubbard Ave, Decatur, IL 62526 or donor’s choice.
