Bernard Joseph Marten's Obituary
Bernard Joseph Marten, 92, of Decatur died Friday, October 23, 2009 in his home.
Mr. Marten was born on October 21, 1917 in Farmersville, IL the son of Lee and Jane Cohen Marten. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Margaret and William Fireman. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #577. He was retired from Caterpillar. He was a WWII Army Veteran and the recipient of two Bronze Battle Stars. He was a quiet and hardworking man who was devoted to his faith and family. He married Helen Virginia Kane in 1950 in Rockford, IL.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Barbara Marten of Decatur; Richard Marten Jill of Woodridge; James Marten Valerie of Bellingham, WA; Dennis Marten of Florida; Ann Nation of Decatur; Bob Marten of Fairview Heights; grandchildren: Kevin, Katie, Kirby, Glindon, Tracey, Jessica, Ryan, Jackie, Tyler, and Courtney; great-grandchildren: Deven, Taylor, and Alexes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ruth Unser, and two brothers, Francis Marten and Lee Marten.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Tuesday October 27, 2009 in St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Rick Weltin as Celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to service in the church. Burial will be 2:00 pm Tuesday in Camp Butler National Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Macon Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Catholic Children’s Home 1400 State St. Alton, IL 62002.
