Obituary for Betty Clara Eckart
Betty Clara (Reece) Eckart, age 79 of Decatur, Illinois, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2023, after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. It would be wrong to say that Betty lost her battle because she never stopped fighting. When anyone else would have broken, Betty stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly look like. There was no quit in Betty. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight as her reward is a face to face meeting with the Creator of the world.
Betty was born November 14, 1943 in Roanoke, Virginia, the daughter of Raymond Ferguson and Nellie Miller. Prior to COVID and her sickness, she was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church. Betty enjoyed playing cards, working on her family tree albums, and spending time with family. She married Ernest “Ernie” “Dib” Eckart on November 22, 1965 in Peoria, Illinois. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2015, one year prior to Ernie’s death. Betty served in various jobs throughout the years, but the one she cherished most of all was being a Mom.
Betty leaves behind her daughters, Tina Herrera of Decatur and Sonja Winstead of NC; son, Bryan (Lana) Eckart of Hume, Missouri; sister, Carlena (Steve) Hudson of Wynne, Arkansas; 11 grandchildren, Misti Eckart, Emilea (Tyler) Carrera, Christopher Herrera, Felina (Daniel) Herrera, Christian Herrera, Marina Herrera, Brianna Eckart, Hannah Eckart, Angela Mattison, Tuesday (Matt) Rockwell White, Clayton (Christina) Rockwell; 14 great-grandchildren, Anthony Herrera; Stefan Eckart, Santiago Eckart, Caitlyn Mattison, Brian Davis, Hannah Cooper, Marissa White, William White, Kayne White, Arabella Rockwell, Trenton Rockwell, and Adalynn Rockwell; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, Emma Mattison and Joel Mattison; a host of nieces, and nephews, and many other extended family members, special daughters Linda Trejo, Marcia Bennett Giles, Melissa Brown Espinoza, and Kristy Ruby, and her faithful loyal companions, Fe-Fe and Blaire, and many other extended family members, church members, and friends. The family wishes to send a special thanks to Memorial Hospice---especially Cherie and Sabre and Dr Ben Esperez. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Ray & Nellie, her husband Dib, great-grandchildren Avonlea Rockwell and Amaris Rockwell and faithful companions Kelly, Sissy, Dinky, Butteroo, and Baby.
Services to celebrate Betty’s life will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Mt. Zion Christian Church, 1125 W Florian Ave, Mt Zion, IL. Burial will be in Harristown Cemetery beside her husband of 50 years. In lieu of flowers the family requests any love offering be sent to Tina Herrera to help cover funeral costs and to settle Betty’s estate.
