Chandis Leo Stewart's Obituary
Chandis Leo Stewart, 93, of Decatur, IL, died Monday, January 22, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 26, 2018, at Moran and Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Friday, January 26, 2018 at Moran and Goebel Funeral Home. Burial will be at North Fork Cemetery in Decatur.
Chandis was born November 11, 1924 in Paden City, WV the son of Benjamin Franklin and Hettie (Billiter) Stewart. He married the love of his life, Evelyn, February 20, 1946 in Paden City, WV. She preceded him in death.
He was the owner of Stewart’s Sewing Machines.
Chandis was an Army veteran of three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a recipient of the purple heart, and bronze star with oakleaf clusters. Most prized was his combat medic medal and multiple flying medals. He served as a Chief Warrant officer as helicopter pilot and flight instructor. He was wounded May 22, 1944 outside of Rome, Italy.
Chandis was Past President of the Evening Lion’s Club and member of VDTA. During his leisure he enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and gambling.
Chandis leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Michael (Susan) Stewart of Mt. Zion, IL, Jana Wrigley (Daniel) of Decatur, IL, Susan Newell (John) of Decatur, IL; sister, Evelyn Mayfield of Weirton, WV, 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Chandis was also preceded in death by his parents, son, Craig Stewart; daughter, Candis Kreher; brothers, Virgil “Bud” and Paul; sisters Stella, Sarah, Lola and Ruth.
