Charles David Peters' Obituary
Charles David Peters, 72, of Decatur, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 in his home surrounded by his family.
Charlie was born August 17, 1935, in Decatur, the son David M. Peters, Jr. and Mary M. Peebles. He graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1953 and from Millikin University in 1957. He was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. Charlie married Jeannine T. Schniederjan on July 21, 1956 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Decatur.
He was a corpsman in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1953-1961 and Macon County Deputy Sheriff from 1956-1958. Charlie was elected to the Macon County Board of Supervisors in 1958-1962. He then was an insurance adjuster for Wolverine Insurance Co. In 1962 Charlie was elected Sheriff of Macon County and served in that position until 1966. Unable to succeed himself, he became a claim loss representative for St. Paul and Marine Insurance Co. In 1970 he became an investigator for the Illinois Defender Project, Fourth Appellate District in Springfield. In 1973 he became and investigator for the State Appellate Defender, Fourth Judicial District in Springfield, retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, National Rifle Association and a life member of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association and National Sheriff’s Association.
In addition to his wife Jeannine, Charlie is survived by four children: Catherine Kim Harris of Murphysboro, David Rebeca Peters of Bloomington, Christopher Carol Peters and Mary Clark of Decatur; grandchildren: Isaac and Isabel Harris of Murphysboro; Taylor, Jared and Hayden Peters of Bloomington; Chelsea Peters of Decatur; Andrew, Rachel and Sarah Clark of Decatur; sister, Judith Paul Fleckenstein; nephew, Daniel Kathy Fleckenstein; niece, Lisa Heil; great nephews: David and Robert Heil; dogs: Precious and Sparky.
He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Joe Fleckenstein.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 pm Saturday, March 15, 2008 at St. James Catholic Church, Rev. David Peters celebrant. Visitation will be two hours prior to the mass at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Decatur. Memorials: St. James Catholic Church or St. Teresa High School.
