Clarence L. Smethers' Obituary
Decatur-Clarence L. Smethers, 95, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2012 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Clarence's life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2012 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 3850 Lourdes Drive Decatur, with Father Rick Weltin Celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Clarence was born March 30, 1917 in Decatur the son of Clarence E. and Mary Agnes (Weber) Smethers. He graduated from St. Teresa and was on their first football team. He was previously employed with the Wabash Railroad, Arsenal in Moline, Caterpillar, General Electric, and Marvel-Schebler where he retired in 1980. He was a charter member of Our Lady of Lourdes and Council 577 Knights of Columbus Decatur, IL. He enjoyed golfing, Notre Dame Football and St. Teresa Football. He married M. Kathleen Young May 30, 1940. She preceded him in death July 27, 2005.
He leaves behind his daughters Mary Anne Stogner and husband Bill of Decatur, Marie K. Schroeder of Decatur, and Jane Wernsing and husband Jim of Effingham, six grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife, son Michael, granddaughter Elizabeth Mueller, and brothers Albert and Joseph.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at McKinley Court and 4100 at DMH for all of their loving care.
