Daniel Mark Heckman's Obituary
Daniel Mark Heckman slipped quietly into eternal rest on Friday morning, March 20, 2026, at home with loved ones by his side. Daniel was born on March 31, 1954, the son of Ferman Richard “Dick” Heckman and Phyllis (Moran) Heckman in Decatur Illinois.
Dan was a man of knowledge, resilience, and determination who built and improved wherever life placed him-in business, at home, and within his family. His advice was sound, his judgment fair, and his steady, effortlessly cool presence earned the trust and respect of others until his last breath.
Dan formed lasting friendships he carried throughout his life while working at Graver Tank, Wagners Castings, and the Illinois Central Railroad before joining his family in building Heckman Healthcare. Along the way, he worked as a layout editor and proofreader for the Herald & Review, a role he enjoyed, and briefly drove a taxi—an experience, like others he didn’t enjoy, he put to good use anyway. He spent the remainder of his career as part of leadership that helped Heckman Healthcare grow into the largest independent medical equipment provider in the region. His opinion was respected locally and sought after throughout the country.
Dan cared deeply about people and the community; he gave his time generously through leadership and service, including as Vice President of Neighborhood Housing Development Corporation, as a board member and past president of the Illinois Association of Medical Equipment Suppliers, and in board roles with Great Lakes Medical Equipment Services and the Commercial Investment Corporation of Decatur. Titles alone did not define his impact: Dan took a sincere interest in others, believed every person had value to offer, and often gave opportunities to those who may have otherwise been overlooked. He believed in helping people find purpose, contribute, and take pride in their work.
In 1978, he married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Fonville. In the 47 years that followed, they built a family and a home for their four children: Eric, Naomi, Maya, and Selena. His devotion to his wife and children was evident in the life he lived, and the example he set as a husband and father was one that others admired, respected, and sought to follow.
His life and legacy live on through his children: Eric (Jennifer) Heckman of Decatur; Naomi Johnson of Florida; Maya (Thomas, III) Slaughter of Decatur; Selena (Avet Vazquez) Heckman of Florida; Grandchildren,: Nadia Heckman, Ayana Wright, Makhi Wright, Mitchell Johnson, Jr., Miles Johnson; Great-grandchildren: Zyliah Johnson, Saint Wright, Sailym Wright; grandchildren through marriage welcomed with an open heart; Adrianna (Brian) Price, Ikeria Wright, Jason Kelly, JaShawn Allee, Jenyia Allee, JenAsia Allee; AJ Vazquez, Aden Vazquez, Alana Vazquez; great-grandson Quest Raekwon Price; siblings Anthony (Adeline) Heckman of Warrensburg, IL; John (Linda) Heckman of Harristown;
Margaret Heckman of Decatur, and Julie (Doug) Page of Decatur; sisters-in-law Evelyn Christine Fonville of Decatur, Henri Ann Fonville of Decatur, and Lanita Fonville of Milwaukee WI; brother-in-law: Michael Fonville of New Orleans LA; son-in-law Mitchell Johnson, Sr.; an enormous family of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many who came to know his guidance, kindness, and steady presence as that of a father, brother, and friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers-in-law Richard Bruce Fonville, Edward Leon Fonville, Carl Wayne Fonville, Philip James Fonville, and Horace Robbins, Sr; and sisters-in-law Jacquelyn Robbins and Jeana Fonville.
The family would like to thank Dr. Mario Velasco and the entire staff of Cancer Care Specialists- IL for their exceptional care and compassion.
We will gather to celebrate a life well lived on Friday, March 27th at 1pm, with a visitation starting at 11am at New Beginnings Church of God in Decatur IL. Condolences may be shared with the family at https://www.moranandgoebel.com.
