David Miller's Obituary
David William Miller (a.k.a. “Bodaga,” “the Optopeter,” and “Wavy Davy”) passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, surrounded by family in his home.
Dave was born in Decatur, IL on September 4, 1940, to Oliver and Dorothy Miller. He married Mary A. Roche on February 19, 1972. Dave graduated from Decatur High School, Millikin University, and Indiana Optometry School. He went on to have a successful optometry career in Decatur for 57 years. He was a 60-year member of the Illinois Optometric Association, a member of St. James and St. Patrick's churches, and 59-year member of the Country Club of Decatur.
Dave grew up an avid photographer, using his own darkroom to develop pictures. He loved playing golf. He was a member of the Millikin Golf team in college and later would often play with a group of his buddies called “The Bandits.” He was an avid tennis player, playing in several tournaments and leagues during his adult life. He also introduced his sons to the sport, spending endless hours over 15 years driving them to tournaments without complaint. Dave loved making people laugh, pulling pranks, listening to the oldies, and playing with his grandson, Auggie.
He is survived by his wife Mary Miller; sister Sue Miller; sons Michael Miller, John (Renee) Miller, Christopher Miller; and grandson August Miller. He is preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses and aides at Elara Hospice.
There will be a private graveside service and a dedicated mass at St. James Church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in David's name to St. Patrick's and St. James Church or the American Cancer Society.
