Della Ann Wesselink's Obituary
North Carolina - Della Ann Wesselink, age 91, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, formerly of Decatur, IL, passed away Friday April 25, 2025.
Della was born June 18, 1933, in Ashton, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Margaret E. (Meinen) Hatting. She married her husband of 63 years, Robert D. Wesselink on December 29, 1954, in St Mary’s Catholic Church in Ashton, Iowa.
Della is survived by her four sons. Bryan (Carmen) of North Carolina, Larry (Rhonda) of North Carolina, Garry (Nannette) of Colorado, and Mark (Kristina) of Maryland. Also surviving are eight grandchildren. Sarah Mackey of Texas and Nolan Wesselink of Indiana; Corey Wesselink of Louisiana and Danielle Farr of Utah; Kyle and Kevin Wesselink of Colorado; Mackenzie and Kasey Wesselink of Maryland; and five great granddaughters along with three great grandsons.
Della is also survived by her sister-in-law, Beverly Picha of Minnesota as well as many nieces and nephews .
Della was preceded in death by her parents, husband and nine siblings (John Hatting, Alma Hons, Leonard Hatting, Clarence Hatting, Eldon Hatting, Elda Keeton, Andrew Hatting, Elaine Wellendorf and Marjorie O’Toole). Della was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Fred Picha of Minnesota.
She was a Charter Member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish during which she was active in the Catholic community of faith. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and on the Parish Council. She was an active member of the Catholic Charites (past President), Legion of Mary, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, and Women’s Society.
Della was also involved in other activities including Boy Scouts of America of which all four of her sons and two grandsons earned the rank of Eagle Scout, charter member of Mother of Twins club, past President of Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary, past President of AAUW Investment Club, and co-chairman of All State Bridge Marathon. She also enjoyed bridge clubs, golf, tennis, dancing and traveling. Her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Visitation will be at 9:30 AM Monday, June 2, 2025, followed by a concelebrated funeral mass of to celebrate Della’s life at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 3850 Lourdes Dr., Decatur Illinois with Rev. Braden Maher & Rev. Richard Weltin concelebrating. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
