Dorothy Elizabeth Newman's Obituary
Dorothy Elizabeth McCormick Newman, 94, of Decatur, passed away on April 14, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Dorothy was born on October 29, 1917, the daughter of Francis “Frank” Joseph and Florence Helene Aull McCormick, in Stonington, Illinois. She was raised in Stonington, where she graduated from Stonington High School. She moved to Decatur and married Richard Carlos Newman on May 29, 1941. Dorothy was a homemaker, hostess and friend extraordinaire. She lived her life surrounded and loved by her family and countless friends.
She was deeply involved in the parish life at St. James Church and School, and volunteered at the Macon County Historical Museum. She was a constant as a volunteer at St. Mary’s Hospital until well after her 90th birthday.
She is survived by her four children: Stephen Carol Newman of Lake Forest IL, Michael Newman of Castro Valley CA, Timothy Diane Newman of Lake Forest IL and Susan Mark Nystuen of Wilmette IL; and seven well-loved and loving grandsons: Jeremiah Newman, Brian Newman, Eric Newman, Kevin Nystuen, Connor Nystuen, Scott Nystuen, and Alex Newman.
She is survived by her sister, Isabelle Perry, and preceded by her husband, Richard Dick Newman, her parents, Frank and Florence McCormick, sisters Mildred Jones, Josephine McCormick, Helen Slaughter, Catherine Bell, and brothers Reverend Francis “Merald” McCormick, Edward McCormick and Robert McCormick.
Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Dorothy’s rich and full life will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Decatur, with the Reverend Joseph Malloy as celebrant. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service, and burial will be at Calvary Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James Church.
