Edward Leon Fonville's Obituary
Decatur – Edward Leon Fonville, 65, of Decatur passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Leon was born on July 20, 1950 in Decatur, IL the son of Edgar and Adlean (Freeman) Fonville. He worked as a GED outreach specialist for Richland Community College. Prior to retirement Leon was the creator of the E. Leon Fonville Black History Bowl at Richland and was student/faculty advisor for the Black Student Association and former assistant basketball coach. He was a former board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Decatur and was defensive coach for their JFL teams. He was a member and deacon of The Church of the Living God CWFF Temple #46. He married Henri Ann Hack on April 23, 1983 in Decatur.
He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife, Henri Ann; son, Braxton Fonville of Decatur; daughter, Serena Johnson (Maxie) of Indian Trail, NC; sisters, Jacquelyn Robbins of Detroit MI; Peggy Heckman (Daniel) of Decatur; Evelyn Christine Fonville of Decatur; brothers, Richard B. Fonville of Danville; Phillip J. Fonville (Jeana) of Park Forest; Michael W. Fonville Sr. (Armenda) of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren, Rhakya and Maxie III “MJ” Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and brother/sister cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Carl Wayne Fonville.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Decatur Memorial Hospital especially Dr. D. Patel.
Homegoing celebration of Leon’s life will be 12 noon on Friday, August 21, 2015 in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be 10 AM -12 PM on Friday in the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Antioch Christian Academy or the E. Leon Fonville Black History Bowl.
