Elder Charles Harver Jr.'s Obituary
Elder Charles Harvey Jr. passed away on Friday November 23, 2007 in his home in Columbus, OH. He was born to Charles and Georgia Harvey, on February 21, 1912 in Brownsville, Tennessee. The family relocated to Decatur, Illinois in 1916. Elder Harvey attended the Decatur Public Schools, which he loved and excelled in, due to his insatiable thirst for knowledge. Elder Harvey later met and married the love of his life, Gertrude Howard. To this union was born Velma Gertrude and the late, Gene Edward Harvey.
Elder Harvey served in the United States Marine Corps, during World War II, in the South Pacific. He was a combat veteran with theaters of operations that included the famed battlefields of the Marianna Islands, Guam, Okinawa, and Saipan.
Elder Harvey was employed by both A. E. Staley's Manufacturing Company and Chastine Consulting for more than 36 years.
Elder Harvey accepted the Lord at the Decatur Street, C.O.G.I.C., under the late Pastor Cleveland Bell. He later accepted the call to the ministry and continued to serve in his local church. Elder Harvey also served under the late Farris Morrison, as the Assistant pastor of the East Side C.O.G.I.C. In his later years, Elder and Mother Harvey joined The Community Temple C.O.G.I.C., under Bishop Willie F. Newbon, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, and Chairman of the Ordination Board, of the Illinois Central Jurisdiction. He also served as an assistant pastor to Bishop Newbon until his health diminished.
Elder Harvey leaves at his passing, his devoted wife, Mother Gertrude Harvey; daughter Mother Velma Rogers Charles Sr., Pastor Emeritus; Son Gene Harvey deceased; Four grand Children, Pastor Charles H. Rogers Jr. Leisa; Candace Rogers deceased; Corey Rogers; Donald Harvey Lorena; Terri Maxwell Bill; Nine Great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews; one sister in-law, Jean Harvey of Oakland California.
Homegoing service will be 11:00 AM Saturday December 1, 2007 in The Community Temple C.O.G.I.C., 759 S. Jackson, Decatur. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The family of Elder Charles Harvey Jr. is being served by Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2801 N. Monroe Street, Decatur.
