Elsie Marie Smith's Obituary
Elsie Marie Smith, 100, went to be with the Lord on March 22, 2023, at Hickory Point Christian Village.
By most people she was known as Marie and by family was called Babe.
Elsie Marie was born October 6, 1922, to Wesley Otto and Ada Murial Ford in Pierson Station, IL. Marie was their second child, the first girl out of nine children. She still has two sisters, Ruth and Nancy and her brother, Arthur, are still living.
When she was about 12 years old, the family moved to Cowden, IL. Around 17, she answered an advertisement to become a nanny in Chicago. Later, she worked a war job during WWII where she met her beloved husband, Robert Smith. They married in 1943. After they were married, she worked for Sears Roebuck, CO for 39 years in Chicago. After retiring, they both moved to Decatur, IL.
Marie and Robert loved traveling and had been to most of the United States. Robert convinced Marie to take up the art of painting. She loved to paint scenery and Decatur landmarks, but mostly of her memories of the homestead. She donated paintings of Decatur landmarks to the Macon County History Museum and Decatur Memorial Hospital. Marie enjoyed writing poems and silly sayings. She has published three poem books. Marie never met a stranger.
Robert preceded her in death October of 1991.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Friday, March 31, 2023, at Moran and Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
