Dr. Evelyn D. Odunsi's Obituary
Evelyn Denise Odunsi ('Sandy'), 58, the oldest child of Isadora Crayton, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2012. Dr. Odunsi was born October 14, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. Her primary education was in Chicago where she graduated from South Shore High School in 1971. Dr. Odunsi received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She went on to earn a medical degree from Southern Illinois University and completed an Obstetrics & Gynecology residency in Springfield, Illinois.
On September 22, 1973, Evelyn was wedded in holy matrimony to Dr. Bennett Odunsi. She was the proud mother of three children'Benetta, Abosede and Ayokunle. In 1990, she opened her medical practice in Decatur, Illinois. Although her offices were located at Decatur Memorial Hospital (DMH), Evelyn also cared for patients at St. Mary's Hospital. Dr. Odunsi was a compassionate doctor who always endeavored to provide the very best level of care to each and every patient. For this reason, many of her patients esteemed her not just as their doctor, but also a friend and mentor.
She was very active in the community. A dedicated member of St Peter's African Methodist and Episcopal Church, she was also a Girl Scout troop leader and avid bridge player. A true servant, Evelyn loved to entertain, laugh and fellowship with friends and family. Evelyn was an excellent cook and regularly cooked for hospitalized and bereaved friends and family members. Love, humility, compassion, generosity and service were the hallmarks of her life.
She leaves to mourn a dedicated husband of 39 years, Dr. Bennett Odunsi, two daughters Benetta Robinson (Arlington), and Abosede, a son, Ayokunle, mother, Isadora Crayton, a sister, Sonya Crayton, brother, Jason (Saran) Crayton and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and several friends who loved and adored her.
Visitation Friday October 5, 2012 5:00 p.m. ' 8:00 p.m. at St. Peter's A.M.E. Church, 515 South Church Street, Decatur, Illinois 62522. Wake Saturday October 6, 2012 10:00 a.m. at Maranatha Assembly of God, 555 Imboden Drive, Decatur, Illinois 62521; Funeral 11:00 a.m. at Maranatha Assembly of God, 555 Imboden Drive, Decatur, Illinois 62521. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2012 at Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago. Memorials may be directed to the Girl Scouts, Dove, or the Good Samaratin Inn.
