Frances J. Stengel's Obituary
Decatur - Frances J. Stengel of Decatur, passed away Friday, August 15, 2025, with her family by her side.
Frances was born December 8, 1926, in Decatur to Arthur F. Delahunty and Marie (Traughber) Delahunty. She married Dr. Robert Stengel of Decatur on February 6, 1954, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Decatur. Frances is survived by her daughter Susan Stengel (Charlie Coleman) of Lynchburg, VA, son Phillip Stengel of Springfield, MO, daughter Ann Stengel of Chicago, IL, daughter Carol Shoemaker (Gene) of Waukesha, WI, four grandchildren and two great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Robert Stengel, daughter-in-law Donni (Lytle) Stengel and grandson Matthew Stengel.
Frances graduated from St. Teresa High School and received a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. After graduating from college, she worked in Chicago at Carson Pirie Scott and Company as an Assistant Buyer. She later returned to Decatur and married Dr. Robert Stengel. They raised four children and enjoyed many years of traveling throughout the world with family and friends. Frances also enjoyed volunteering for St. Mary’s Hospital auxiliary and Holy Family School. On Saturdays during football season, she could always be found cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at The Waterford at Ironbridge and Phoenix Healthcare in Springfield, MO for their loving care and support.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 10 am until the Funeral Mass at 11 am at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Holy Family Church https://www.decaturholyfamily.com or St. Teresa High School https://www.stteresa.org.
