Francis Allan Archer's Obituary
Francis Allan Archer, age 85, of Decatur, IL, passed away peacefully in Decatur on May 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Du Quoin, Illinois, on July 5, 1939, the son of Francis and Marie (Hess) Archer. He married Janet Barber on May 9, 1958, in Du Quoin, IL.
Francis was a well-respected and liked member of the Decatur community. In his younger years, he was a skilled competition shooter. His passion for aviation led him to be a dedicated attendee of air shows, and he found great enjoyment in this spectacle of flight.
A proud member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, Francis actively participated in the Shriners, often driving their band float in local parades. He embodied the spirit of service, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need without ever seeking recognition or reciprocation. Francis was a fiercely independent man who preferred to do things himself.
Above all else, Francis was a devoted family man. He cherished his children and was always there to offer support and assistance in any way he could.
His professional life saw him working as a pressman for several newspapers, including the Du Quoin Call, the Decatur Herald, and later, the Springfield State Journal-Register.
In his leisure time, Francis enjoyed the simple pleasures of gardening, continuing his fascination with aviation by attending air shows, and the engaging hobby of flying model airplanes. He also held a strong sense of philanthropy, regularly supporting causes such as Boys Town, Disabled American Veterans, and Wounded Warrior Project.
Francis was preceded in death by his mother, father, and one brother. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his two sons, Robert and Ricky (and wife Rebecca); his daughter, Donna; three sisters; and two brothers. He will be remembered by his six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Moran & Goebel Funeral Home is providing cremation services for Francis. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, the Cancer Center, or one of his other favorite charities. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.moranandgoebel.com.
