Fred Hurl Tyus' Obituary
Fred Hurl Tyus, lovingly known as Husband, Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle Fred and Big Brother. He was born December 18, 1930, in Brownsville, Tennessee. He was the eldest son of Fred Hurl (Kit) and Geneva Tyus.
Fred received his high school diploma from Carver High school in Brownsville Tennessee.
Fred was drafted in the Army on May 17, 1951, there he was a cook stationed in Seattle Washington. He loved Washington but said it was to far from his family so when released he returned home.
Fred married Virginia Allison on December 30,1953 in Corinth Mississippi, witnessed by Mrs. Ardelia Jelks. The two spent 68 wonderful year’s together, laughing, traveling and creating a family full of wonderful memories. Anyone who knew Fred knew that Kate, as he often called her was the “Apple of His Eye”. He often looked at her with a smile and a praise and a quick poke at her for fun. Fred poured his life and love into his wife, children and family. Fred worked hard at various jobs but retired from Wagner’s Casting Company after 28 years of pouring iron, a machinist and an also an inspector. He was a member of UAW and Steelworker Union. (union Stewart).
Fred was a Man’s man as he was a Man of Integrity, he taught his children to love the Lord and to take care of each other. He made sure they all had a good education, and he taught us to love and respect others and how to live in this world. He was a Man of his word, if he said something he meant it. He taught us to believe in ourselves as Daddy saw the uniqueness in each one of us, never comparing us to each other but always with a smile, a laugh and encouragement. His son in laws also say he was a good man and and they respected him. Oh but to know Fred and hear that laugh, it would light up a room, full and robust. He was never upset about anything and his laugh was his trademark, no matter what happened he found away to laugh thru it! Just to hear him laugh seem to remove all worry and doubt, no matter the situation.
Fred was the oldest of nine brothers and sisters and their was no bond between a family any stronger. They supported each other in everything they did. If anyone needed anything they were always there to support each other emotionally or financially just the way their father, Fred H Tyus (Kit) had taught them. Anyone who knew the brothers and sisters admired their commitment and respect for each other. You often saw them together laughing , visiting one another and sharing in each other’s burdens. They embodied life together. Dad and his brothers in Decatur would also meet with the nephews, sons, grandson’s and son in law’s monthly for a Men’s breakfast, as iron sharpens iron. Fred loved family reunions and taught us the importance of gathering with our family as the family moved further away from Decatur with their careers. When we reflect we can only think of two reunions he actually missed!
Fred loved his Grandkids, no matter how far they lived away from him. He always attended their sporting events, plays, graduations, college registration and weddings. He was loved by his grandkids as he was that loving supportive Grandpa that always spent time with them laughing and teasing them and supporting their interest.
Fred loved sporting events, live music and plays. He loved to go watch the Cardinals play baseball in St Louis, he not only took his kids but his nephews too. He would also go to Indianapolis to the Colt’s and Pacer’s game with friends and family. If it was a sporting event he was there. He always included his family in the things he did. He kept his concert tickets and would pull them out to talk about the time he saw Dionne Warwick with Burt Bararach live in St. Louis, now daddy said “that was the best concert he EVER saw”
Fred Tyus, was called by the Lord to come to his permanent home on Friday, August 5, 2022 at the age of 91 years. That Friday he laughed and joked with his family and told his sweetheart Kate to give him a kiss and hug before he sent her home. After he sent everyone home, he slipped away to his heavenly home.
