DECATUR – Fred J. Vahlkamp, 84, passed away at 7:45 pm, July 20th at St. Mary’s Hospital, surrounded by his family. He died of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. Fred was born August 14, 1933 in Carlyle IL the son of John a Read Obituary
Mary Jo and Family,Fred was such a gentleman. It was always a pleasure to see you both praying together at Pana. There was a gentleness about him and an aura of peace in both your presence that I miss. I have a lot of health issues going on and may not be able to attend the funeral, but I will never forget Fred or you. Fred will be celebrating with other Pana Prayer Warriors and those who have gone before him. May, Our Lady wrap you all in her mantle of love and peace.
Stuart,I am sorry for your loss. No words will take the pain away of losing a father. We can take comfort though in knowing that death is not forever. Mary Jo and Family,It was with sorrow that I received the news of the loss of Fred. I fell a closeness to the Vahlkamp family. I always enjoyed working with Fred, at Caterpillar and enjoyed the times we spent together at your home or other activities away from work. I was deeply touched that Stuart, took the effort to track me down on my cell phone to make sure I knew of the loss of his father.You have a strong family established by the standards Fred set in his life. Other commitments prevent me from attending the visitation and funeral, but my heart is with the Vahlkamp family during this time of rejoicing and sorrow. Fred was an outstanding man, husband, and father.

We are now in the Cedarhurst here in Breese. We have separate apartments, she is in the memory care area due to her having Parkinson’s and dementia and I am in the assisted care area. Every day is a new day ! We pray every day watching Mass on EWTN and do a rosary every evening. We will offer the Mass Thursday morning in Fred’s memory…..

Fred was a great role model to those of us fortunate enough to work with him in Decatur Plant Engineering. Faith, family, work ethic, integrity, a fast walker; Fred had it all. He was responsible for many of the work process fixtures that helped make the Decatur Plant such a success. His life was truly a celebration.
