Gertie Coleman's Obituary
Gertie M. Coleman, 70, of Belleville formerly of Decatur passed away on Tuesday June 28, 2011 in her home.
Gertie was born on October 8, 1940 in Gunnison, MS the daughter of James Burk Wiggins and Lowren Early. She worked at Caterpillar and as a foster mother to eighteen children. She retired from Webster Cantrell Hall. She worked very hard to get her kids through school. She was a member of Life Changers Church. She married Jerry J. Coleman in 1956 at Rosedale, MS he preceded her in death on January of 1994.Collinsville
She leaves to cherish fond memories her sons, Karl Coleman of Collinsville; Tony Coleman Carrisa of St. Louis, MO; daughters, Michelle Coleman of Belleville; Marsha Coleman of Decatur; Marilyn Coleman of Decatur; father, James Wiggins of Gunnison, MS; brothers, Rev. Wesley Atwater of Decatur; Calvin Atwater of Decatur; Donald McElroy of Hattiesburg, MS; Dale Atwater of California; Tommy Wiggins Betty of Decatur; sisters, Laura Dennis of Oaklawn; Mary Newbern Therron of Decatur; Cynthia Atwater Leggons Indianapolis, IN; of Tamara Shumate Sammie of Indianapolis, IN; Brenda Johnson Edward of Decatur; Evelyn Wiggins of Gunnison, MS; grandchildren, Netishia, David, Kyler, Kari, Michelle, Brittany, KC, Shaterika, Inman, Shawn, Tonae, and Trenton; special friends, Theresa “Doll” Dorsey, Tommy Ferguson, Cora Mean, and Delores Small; special cousin, Beatrice Leeks; ten great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and other family.
She was preceded in death by her mother, husband, and two brothers, James Wiggins and Oscar Wiggins.
Homegoing service to celebrate Gertie’s life will be 12 noon Wednesday July 6, 2011 in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to service in the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery and conclude with the “Flight Home” ceremony.
