Gladys was born on September 5, 1924 in Moccasin Township, Effingham County daughter of Ida May 'Tipsword' Ross and Robert C. Ross. Gladys married James 'Pate' Garrett in St. Charles Mo on May 8, 1942. Pate passed away on July 1, 1974, but remained her husband in her heart until the day she passed.
Gladys moved to Decatur that August making her home with her son James and his wife, Carolyn. Gladys better known as little Granny was an important member of her son's family for 36 years before her poor health forced her to enter Fair Havens. Granny was a wonderful grandmother caring and loving them with all her heart. Christi being four, when Granny joined our immediate family. Kelly never new life without her constant presence. Christi and Kelly often joked they had to tell Granny they were big enough to walk the two blocks to school by themselves, but they let her walk with them with pleasure even in the sixth grade.
Granny went to college with Kelly one summer for a week. Had to make sure that the apartment was clean enough and Kelly was not alone. Needless to say Granny loved every minute of her college experience.
