Helena Jones, 95, of Princeton, IL, formerly of Niantic, IL, died Monday, May 23, 2005 at Prairie View Healthcare.
Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held at 10:00 am Friday May 27, 2005 in St. Ann Catholic Church, Niantic with Msgr. John Renken as celebrant. Visitation will be at 6-8:00 pm Thursday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home and 9-10:00 am Friday in the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Illiopolis. Helena Celia Smith was born August 23, 1909, the daughter of Hugh and Margaret Clark Smith. She attended school in Niantic and graduated from Niantic High School in 1927. She attended Illinois State Normal University and graduated from Millikin University in Decatur in 1959 with a B.S. She taught school for 42 years. The first five years were in the country schools: Prairie Vale at Dalton City, Willow Glen at Maroa, and West Stringtown at Illiopolis. She then taught 5th and 6th grades in Niantic, and upon consolidation with Harristown, she taught in the junior high in Niantic, retiring in 1973. She was a life member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Niantic, a charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority, and a Girl Scout leader for 15 years. She married John R. Jones on July 1, 1939, in Illiopolis, IL. He preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1994.
Surviving are one son, James R. Jane Jones of Tiskilwa, IL; two grandsons, Michael R. Jones Pamela Brooker of Madison, AL, and Matthew W. Jones of Tiskilwa; two great-granddaughters, Julia Nicole Jones and Angelica Marie Jones of Tiskilwa; one sister-in-law, Dessie Smith of Joliet, IL; and one niece, Barbara Smith of Joliet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Thomas P. “Tuck” Smith and John M. Smith.
