James Joseph "Joe" Shay's Obituary
James Joseph “Joe” Shay, 36, of Glendale, California, formerly of Hammond, Illinois, passed away October 6, 2024.
Joe was born in Decatur, Illinois, on July 14, 1988, the son of James “Pat” and Billie (Gobel) Shay. He was a member of St. Patrick Parish in his youth. After graduating from Cerro Gordo High School and attending classes at Heartland Community College, he began working in the restaurant industry, where he filled many roles, including manager. In his spare time, he enjoyed writing, drawing, and playing his ukulele. He moved to California and embraced the laid-back lifestyle he found there.
Joe is survived by his parents; siblings Daniel Matthew Shay, of Lakewood, CO and Hannah (Matthew) Fraysure of Forsyth, IL; niece and nephews Isabella, Noah, Calvin, and Jack Fraysure; grandfather Noble Abendroth; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by grandparents James Joseph and Alice Jane Shay and Barbara Abendroth.
Visitation for Joe will be from 10am to 11:30am Tuesday, November 12, at St. Patrick Church in Decatur. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:30am. Burial in Graceland Cemetery will follow the service.
