John Robert Comerford's Obituary
John R. Comerford, 74, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014.
John was born August 19, 1939 in Decatur, the son of Robert and Helen (Noonan) Comerford. A lifelong member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, John was a former member of the parish council and spent countless hours utilizing his floral decorating skills decorating the church throughout the year for various holidays. John worked as a systems analyst at Illinois Power before retiring in 1996. He loved working with Habitat for Humanity and supported his golf habit by working as a Funeral Assistant at Graceland/Fairlawn and Moran & Goebel Funeral Homes since 2007. John loved to spend time with his family. He especially loved watching his grandchildren’s events. He married Mary Jo Vail on May 5, 1962 in Decatur.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Jo of Decatur; children: Rob (Carla) Comerford of Decatur, Steve (Renee) Comerford of Belleville, Mike (Jean) Comerford of Rochester, Ann Comerford of Macomb, and Katey (companion, Jason Caddell) Comerford of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren: David, Eileen, Evan, Samantha, Jack, Maggie, Elaine, Louise, and Catherine; sister, Joann (Richard) Sager of LaPorte, IN; brother, Tim (Linda) Comerford of Indianapolis, IN; sister-in-law, Betsy (Mike) Barker of Decatur, and brother-in-law, David (Diane) Vail of Petersburg; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Kevin Sager.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home; vigil prayer service will be at 4:30 p.m. Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial celebrating John’s life will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Rev. Chris Comerford, main celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Decatur Area Habitat for Humanity.
