John David Deetz's Obituary
Decatur-John David Deetz, 78, of Decatur, left this earthly place to join his wife Lorena in the paradise of God Thursday, August 14, 2014.
John was born October 29, 1935 in Decatur, the son of Donald and Guyneith (Kepler) Deetz. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1954. He was previously employed with USPS retiring after almost thirty years of service. He then worked part time at the Decatur Masonic Temple. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Decatur Civil War Round Table, Champaign Civil War Round Table, Decatur Genealogical Society, Macon County Historical Society, Stephen Decatur Lodge #979 A.F. & A.M., Macon Chapter #21, R.A.M., Decatur Council #16 C.M., Beaumanoir Commandery #9 K.T., York Rite College #42, Knights of the York Cross of Honour IL Priory #11, Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priest Lily of the Valley Tabernacle #XLVI, Grand Commandery Knights Templar IL. He enjoyed good music, golf, reading about the Civil War and local history, and old western movies. He was a quiet, polite, and caring person. He married Lorena Kay Gabhart December 18, 1957. She preceded him in death December 4, 2010. They shared fifty-three years of marriage.
He leaves behind his children Sonya Kay Anthony of Decatur, Steven John Deetz of Cave Junction, Oregon, and Scott William Deetz and wife Lisa of Dayton, Ohio, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife, and brother Don, and infant brother Guy.
Services to celebrate John’s life will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at Moran and Goebel Funeral Home, 2801 N. Monroe St. Decatur. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home with Masonic Rites at 10:30. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the music department at First Baptist Church in Decatur.
