Our sincere sympathy to the family. John was a great friend to me during our time at the Knights of Columbus. Have known the family for many years going back to our children at St James School. Sorry we were unable to attend the visitation.

We did not know Mr Fitzgerald personally but we did sit across the isle from him @ St James for many years so we would see him & whomever happened to be with him that day. I do remember He had a really nice friendly smile.

To John and the entire Fitzgerald family. I was very sorry to hear about your dad. But I want you to know that he had a big impact on the lives of those he coached. We were lucky to have such a dedicated and skilled coach who prepared us so well. He was a man with integrity. I believe we were undefeated among Decatur teams for four years and lost a few games to Peoria. We knew what to do and we had a lot of fun. And we were also lucky to have an outstanding teammate in John. My last encounter with your dad was at a St. Teresa football game. He was with David watching his grandson play. I laughed and apologized to him for not following his instructions one time in the huddle. He suggested that I personally and firmly hand the basketball back to the "on the road ref" who had just fouled me out of a tournament game. So many good memories. RIP Coach.
