Decatur- John William Walters Sr., 91, of Decatur, passed away in his home with his family at his side, Saturday, October 13, 2012.
A service to celebrate the life of John will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 18, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1 Bachrach Ct, Decatur, IL, with a visitation from 6-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Interment with Military Honor's and 'Flight Home' ceremony will be in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Keeping with John’s requests casual attire is requested.
John was born March 30, 1921 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Robert and Mary (Gilmore) Walters. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard, and retired as an over the road truck driver and was a member of the teamsters. He spent his free time among great friends at Lake Taylorville campgrounds. John loved life and looked forward to every moment with his family and friends. He married Betty Maxine Moke on October 5, 1946 and she preceded him in death February 14, 2010.
John leaves behind to cherish many memories his daughters; Kathy (David) Gaither of Moweaqua, Georgia Korthals and Nancy Benson of Decatur, and Vicky (Gary) Campbell of Naperville; son, John Walters Jr., of Decatur; ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren; brother, Bob (Margaret) Walters of Decatur and many friends.
He was reunited in Heaven with his loving wife, parents, brothers: Robert Walters, Corbit Ralph 'Skeeter' Walters and Junior Wayne Walters; sisters: Mary Priscilla Trusner, Catherine Lucille Tuttle, and Ida Mae Burgess.
The family would like to thank Dr. Duncan, St. Johns Hospice staff, and the V.A Clinic for all the kindness and care they showed Walter.
