Johnny L. Tenegra's Obituary
Johnny L. Tenegra, 84, of Mt. Zion, Illinois passed away peacefully on January 29, 2023, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
Johnny was born in Iloilo, Philippines, on July 21, 1938, into the Tenegra family to two wonderful parents. He married Ofelia Aguinaldo, the love of his life, on May 4, 1984 in Lockport, Illinois. Johnny was passionate practicing Aikido martial arts in the Philippines and the United States. He was founder and chief instructor of the Pilipinas Aikido Propagation Association (PAPA), the initial representative Aikido organization in the Philippines. He was assigned as the sole Aikido area representative for the Philippines by Aikido World Headquarters (HOMBU), and initiated bringing Masters and Senseis from Japan to the Philippines to train PAPA Members each year. In the United States, he brought his teachings and experience to PAPA Aikido USA, teaching with Sensei Max Soriano and Sensei Michael Eichenberg.
Johnny has been a fighter and is a cancer survivor. To his son, he was a very involved father and mentor. He loved music, especially the Platters and Elvis Presley. He enjoyed watching classic westerns and 1980s action television shows and movies and spending time with his family at all-you-can-eat family restaurants. He was a devout Catholic and member of Holy Family Parish in Decatur, Illinois.
Johnny is survived by his wife Ofelia; son Johnny (Nicole) Tenegra; and grandchildren Isabella, Joseph, and Dominic. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Johnny will be held at Moran and Goebel Funeral Home on Friday, February 10 from 5pm to 7pm with Vigil Prayer at 5pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Church on Saturday, February 11 at 10am. Burial in Graceland Cemetery will follow the Mass.
