Joseph Raymond Aman's Obituary
Joseph Raymond Aman, 89, of Decatur, Illinois, passed away May 5, 2024, at Imboden Creek Senior Living.
Joe was born in Decatur on April 6, 1935, the son of Raymond and Helen (Townend) Aman. He served in the U.S. Army and then began a career as a communications specialist with Illinois Bell Telephone. He retired from there after 30+ years of service. He married Loretta Strocher on August 30, 1958, in Macon, Illinois.
Joe’s great joy was camping with his family and friends. As members of the Aliners Camping Club, they camped at sites in all 48 contiguous states. Building the campfire was a favorite part of the camping experience for Joe and Loretta. They also belonged to the Wilders Camping Club. Joe was a faithful member of Ss. James and Patrick Parish.
Joe is survived by his wife Loretta; son Jeffrey Aman of Decatur; daughters Peggy Aman of Seattle, Washington, and Susan (Todd) Shackelford of Harristown, Illinois; grandchildren Ashley (Daniel) Alderson, Philip (Hannah) Aman, Austin Shackelford, and Colby Shackelford; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James Aman, and grandson Christopher.
Moran & Goebel Funeral Home is providing cremation services for Joe. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, May 13, 2024, at St. Patrick Church. Visitation will be one hour before the Mass. Burial in Macon Township Cemetery will follow the Mass. Memorials may be directed to Camp Ondessonk.
