The reason why I was off of facebook for the week was because my paternal Grandfather died last week. My oldest son and I made the road trip to Illinois to say our final goodbyes. I was able to reconnect with family I have not seen in 35 years. I met cousins I didn't even know existed. Needless to say, that side of my family is not very close, but this was an opportunity to change that. I'm not sure what happens next, but facebook is super-useful for things like this. The good news is that about a year ago, Grandpa Walker called to inform me that he had been saved. For those of you who do not understand Christian terminology, it means that he had become a Christian. When I asked him how he knew he was saved, he replied, "Because I trust God and I believe His Word."My Grandpa only had an 8th grade education, but the simplicity with which he explained how he knew he had been forgiven for his sins was beautiful. He knew that although he had attended Church from time to time with Grandma Walker, he had never really trusted Jesus to save him from the consequences of his sin.The fact of the matter is, we have all made a mess of our lives in one way or another. None of us deserve to be with God and neither can we earn that position. Our actions, attitudes and thoughts earn us eternal separation from God in hell. To remedy the situation, God lovingly sent His Son to take our place and pay our debt. Romans 5:8 says, â??But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.â?My Grandpa came to understand that by recognizing his inability to please God on his own, he needed a perfect substitute. Jesus became his substitute and Savior. Grandpa gave Jesus his sin and Jesus gave Grandpa His status before God the Father. When God looks at my Grandpa, he no longer sees him as the smoking, drinking, brawling sailor/trucker that he once was. God now sees in my Grandpa the sinless perfection of Jesus Christ. If you have not yet come to Jesus to save you from your sins, I hope you donâ??t wait as long as my Grandpa did. He was fortunate in that he peacefully died in his sleep. While it is awesome to think that my Grandpa closed his eyes in sleep on earth and opened them awake in heaven, none of us have that assurance. We are not guaranteed the next five minutes on this planet.I know that my Grandpa had many regrets during his life. He was married three times and left a fractured family that may never fully recover, but there is one thing he will never regret. He made his peace with God and will enjoy Him in His presence forever. Please donâ??t make the eternal mistake that my Grandpa almost made. Come to Jesus before it is too late. Grandpa is glad that he did.-Keith Walker (Eldest Grandson of Ken Walker)
