Dr. Larry Troy's Obituary
Decatur – Dr. Larry Troy, 64, of East Peoria formerly of Decatur passed away on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 in Decatur Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.
Dr. Troy was born on December 1, 1947 in New York, NY the son of Elliot and Harriet (Van Thyne) Troy.
Dr. Troy received his B.A. from State University of New York-Stony Brook, and M.A, Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. He was a Professor of Sociology in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Millikin University starting in 1979 and was a devoted and much-loved member of the University community. He taught a variety of courses including Introduction to Sociology, Poverty & Welfare Reform, The Family, Approaches to Sociological Theory, Sociological Analysis, and Urban Sociology. His research interests included community development, family violence, and service learning. He enjoyed photography. He had a special commitment to service to others.
Surviving are his life partner, Dawn Williams; daughter, Sara Cothern (Larz) of Decatur; son, Alex Lovell-Troy (Sarah Stewart) of Tucson, AZ; sister, Marcia Laird (Jim) of Danville, CA; grandchild, Sadie Stewart-Troy; and step-grandchild, Cameron Cothern.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Larry Troy will be 5 PM Friday, September 28, 2012 in Albert Taylor Theatre at Millikin University. Memorials are suggested to Outreach 360 or Dr. Larry Troy Memorial Fund at Millikin University.
