Lee Edward Handley's Obituary
Decatur- Lee Edward Handley, 79, of Decatur, passed away Monday evening, December 22, 2014.
Lee was born January 3, 1935 in Chicago to William and Hilda (Schmidt) Handley. He married Marjorie Maloney on June 21, 1958. He played professional baseball for the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers. After retiring from baseball, he taught and coached at Central Catholic, St. Teresa and Decatur District 61 schools for over 30 years. He also coached summer league baseball for many years in Decatur with the American Legion and Thoroughbred teams.
He is survived by four children, Lee (Lori) Handley of Louisburg, Kansas, Joseph (Liz) Handley of Decatur, Michael (Nancy) Handley of Springfield and Kathleen (Bruce) Gibbens of Bloomington; twelve grandchildren, children of Lee ( Lori) are Megan Handley, Logan Handley and Caitlin (Bronson) Eldridge; children of Joseph (Liz) are Ivy, Jake and Mac; children of Michael (Nancy) are Brennan, Ian and Gannon; children of Kathleen (Bruce) are Sean, Sarah and Lauren; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Blaire Eldridge; one brother, Bill Handley of Clearwater, FL; two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 noon Friday, December 26, 2014 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Decatur. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Friday at the church before the service. Private family burial will follow. Memorials may be directed to the Angel Fund 2710 North Water Street, Decatur, IL 62526 or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the many students and friends who supported Lee during his lengthy illness. A special thank you to the staff at Aspen Ridge-Symphony, who cared for “Coach” and loved him as their own father or brother, for the last four years. You are a true treasure.
