Leon E. Baker's Obituary
Mt. Zion-Leon Edward Baker Sr., 96, of Mt. Zion, passed away on Tuesday, October 04, 2016 in his home.
Leon was born on February 26, 1920 in Decatur, IL the son of Lee Roy and Dessie (Clifton) Baker. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW Post #99 since 1946, the American Legion Castle William Post #105, and AIW 728. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association, and California Rabbit Breeder’s Club. He worked for Marvel Schebler/Borg Wagner, Wagner’s Casting/Intermet retiring at the age of 85.He married Mary Margaret Vogel on June 26, 1965 in Decatur.They were twenty days shy of their forty-nine year anniversary. She preceded him in death on June 6, 2014.
He leaves behind his children, Delores McIntyre and fiancé Bob Leonard of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; Leon “Ed” Baker, Jr. and wife Marilyn of Decatur; grandchildren, Noelle Zuber and husband Brian, Scott Baker and wife Jenny, Michelle Howland and husband Mike, Lillian Ritchey, John Rokosh, and Kirt Abernathey; step-grandchild, Troy Abernathey; half-sister, Mary Lou Cox of Decatur; nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was reunited in Heaven with his parents, wife, half-sisters, Ruth Sparks, Naomi Small, and Alta Mize; half-brother, O. Tommy Madden, daughter, Joann Abernathey, and granddaughter, Dawn McVaney.
Funeral to celebrate Leon’s life will be 10 AM Monday, October 10, 2016 in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2-4 PM Sunday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon County Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to the VFW Post #99.
