Leon Harrel David Peters' Obituary
DECATUR - Leon David Harrel Peters 85 passed away Saturday morning Feb.10, 2007 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services celebrating Leon's life will be 11:00 am Wednesday February 14, 2007 in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour before service in the funeral home. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Macon County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Scovill Zoo in Decatur.
Leon was born on December 7, 1921 in Vandalia, Illinois, the son of Samuel and Myrtle Hall Peters. He was the last surviving sibling of nine children. Three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.
He married Ruth Eileen Bland on March 31, 1944, and they celebrated their 62nd anniversary of marriage last year. They have four children: Leon Junior Peters and wife Carolyn of Mapleton, IL; Sandra De Grave of Decatur; David Wayne Peters and wife Susan of Upland, CA; Tracy Lee Peters and wife Joyce of Decatur; ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Leon served in the Navy during WWII in the Pacific, North Atlantic and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaigns. He was a fireman first-class and received a bronze star during the Russian Convoy Operations.
He retired from A.E. Staley Mfg. Co. in 1984 after 37 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed repairing antique clocks. Leon was a flower and vegetable gardener and painter of landscapes.
He was a member of the VFW Post #99 and the Staley Retirees Club.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ming, Dr. Caceres and Dr. Fior, and their staff for their care and compassion over the last two years.
