Leopoldo Mañon's Obituary
Leopoldo Mañon, known to many affectionately as “Leo”, aged 76 years, residing in Sullivan, Illinois, passed away on February 26th, 2019. He is survived by his wife Victoria, his son Eliezer and daughter-in-law Stacey, his son Odniel and daughter-in-law Brittany, his daughter Wendy and his son-in-law, Michael, and his granddaughters, Sophia and Yuliana. He was preceded in death by his sister Angela and his granddaughter Alicia Nicole.
Leo was born in the Dominican Republic, in the small town of San Antonio de Guerra in 1942. He became a young man during the tumultuous years of the sixties, he wanted to become a marine and fight in Vietnam. His sister Angela’s intervention dissuaded him. However, he soon became a soldier anyway, but of Christ. He was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on August 6th, 1966. The zeal he would have given to the military was quickly directed into his ministry, and for close to 53 years he devoted his life to serving his God, Jehovah. Along his career, he helped many people to come to know God, and he has left many ‘letters of recommendation.’ (2 Corinthians 3:1)
He was a devoted family man, working nights, going to school and ultimately getting a job with the city of New York, all so he could provide for his family, teaching his children the value of hard work. He loved his friends and the people he called his ‘brothers’, the worldwide family of Jehovah’s people. He was a friend, a counselor, a father-figure, a shepherd and a brother to those who had the happy fortune of crossing paths with him. He was known everywhere he went for his jovial disposition. He loved playing dominoes on the weekend and watch his beloved team, the New York Mets. We can still remember his shouts of joy in ’86. He always had a song in his heart, and if you put on music at a gathering, those old bones were cutting a rug.
He always expressed his desire to remain faithful, so when his life ended, he would be remembered by God on the ‘last day’ and brought back in a resurrection that will see him enjoying life in the earthly paradise his God promised him.(John 11:24) His legacy of faithfulness will live on in us so that we can be there to receive him again when his days of his compulsory service come to their finish. (Job 14:14, 15)
