Leroy S. "Sonny" Newbon, 64, of Decatur, departed this life on Tuesday, January 06, 2004 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Homegoing services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004 in Community Temple C.O.G.I.C., Bishop Willie F. Newbon officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services in the church. Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2004 in Camp Butler National Cemetery. Services entrusted to Moran & Goebel Funeral Home.
Sonny was born on December 28, 1939 the son of Willie and Mattie Mae Jelks Newbon. He worked as a relief operator at Firestone for 31 years before retiring in 2000. Sonny was a member of Community Temple C.O.G.I.C. He married Willie Mae Hill on November 28, 1973 in Decatur. Leroy and his wife were foster parents for many years. He had a quiet love for people.
He leaves not to mourn but to cherish fond memories, his wife of Decatur; children: Cory L. Clark, wife Celestine of Decatur; Scotte Hill of Decatur; Julian Mills of Denver CO; Leroy Newbon Jr. of Decatur; Sharri Newbon of Phoenix AZ; Aaliyah Newbon, Kameesha Newbon, and Tavie Newbon all of Decatur; brothers: Bishop Willie F. Newbon, wife Pat of Decatur; U.L. Newbon, wife Billie of Decatur; Joel Rivers, wife Ruth of Tennessee; sisters: Gladys Shields, husband Mac of Decatur; Louise Roberson, husband Howard of Decatur; Dorothy Helm, husband Charles of Decatur; Ruth Turnbo, Joan Slaw, Joyce Lee, Linda Lee and Bernadine Lee all of Decatur; mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Patterson; 11 grandchildren; one uncle and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His parents, grandparents, 2 sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
The family would like to thank Dr. Duncan for all of his care and compassion.
