Lois J. Smith's Obituary
Lois J. Smith, 71 of Texas, formerly of Decatur, joined our Heavenly Father on Wednesday August 27, 2003 after a long courageous battle with kidney cancer.
Funeral Mass will be 10 A.M. Saturday, August 30, 2003 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Fr. Rick Weltin celebrant. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home, vigil prayer service will be at 5:30 P.M. Burial will be in St. Isidore Cemetery, Dalton City. Lois was born in Oak Park on November 27, 1931 the daughter of Lawrence P. and Ernestine L. Gasser McNiel. She graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1949 and received a Bachelor's of Art degree in 1953 from Millikin University. She then received a Master of Education in reading in 1977 and an Education Specialists Degree EED in Administration and Supervision in 1979, both from Middle Tennessee State University. She was appointed as a representative for the International Year of the Child by Lamar Alexander, governor of Tennessee. She was President of the PTA in Elkton, TN as well as regional President in the middle Tennessee area. All of her many accomplishments would not have been possible without the loving support of her dear husband and children. Lois was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and served on the Board of Education, and helped to start along with her sister Carole the prayer line at the church. She taught school in Decatur, Pulaski, TN., Dallas TX., and most recently in Stonington Elementary and Mt. Auburn Elementary. Lois married P. Thomas Smith on October 18, 1952 in Decatur.
Surviving are her loving husband of 50 years; children: Thomas L. Smith of California, Cyndra L. Vincent son-in-law David of Missouri, David A. Smith daughter-in-law Judy, Sandra M. Wylie son-in-law Tom, and Susan L. Stovall son-in-law Steve all of Texas. Also survived by ten grandchildren, special nephew, Ron Rector and family, several nieces and nephews, and many dear and special friends.
Her parents; sisters: Carole Anne Rector and Sandra Marie McNiel preceded her in death.
