Loretta Umfleet's Obituary
Loretta Mae Umfleet, 90, of Decatur, IL, passed away on January 28, 2025 after a short term decline in health. Loretta was born on December 6, 1934 to Irene and Philip Durbin of Decatur, IL. Loretta graduated from St. Teresa High School in 1953 and began her career at Illinois Bell Telephone Company where she was employed for more than 30 years. In 1954, Loretta married the love of her life, Raymond Umfleet, who preceded her death in 1992. Loretta and Raymond went on to have 6 children: John, Dan, Cindy, James, Bill and Cathy.
Recently, Loretta celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends and with a surprise video call with grandchildren and her new 4 month old great-grandson. Loretta’s family was her primary focus in life; love for her family was obvious to all who knew her. Loretta was a devout parishioner at Holy Family Church for over 50 years; she enjoyed contributing to the parish and built many close relationships with parishioners and laity. She was a volunteer for Faith in Action of Macon County and a member of Illinois Bell Telephone Pioneers. Above all, Loretta was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed the occasional trips to either Chicago or St. Louis to take in the Cubs-Cardinal rivalry and enjoyed joining with extended family for Spring training games in Arizona. Her life was made complete in 2016.
Loretta is survived by her children: Dan (Connie) Umfleet, Bill Umfleet, Mary Sue Umfleet, Cathy (Chris) Gevock; grandchildren, Katie, Josh, Roman, Amber, Bill, Josie (Mitch) Lovell, and Justine; great grandson, Luke; and special friend David Hazelrigg and many other loving friends and staff at Imboden Creek Gardens. Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, son John, daughter Cindy (Art) Suel, son James Umfleet, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Sarah Durbin, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and David Fleigle, sister Rose Marie Durbin, brother-in-law Bob (Vi) Hutchens, and companion Leroy Blakeman. Special thanks to Debbie Durbin for all of her love and attention to Loretta.
