Margaret "Ellen" (DeGroot) Whitrock's Obituary
Margaret “Ellen” (DeGroot) Whitrock, 90, passed away May 2, 2023, in Decatur, IL after a battle with Alzheimer’s.
Ellen was born to William and Katherine DeGroot July 21, 1932, in Washington, D.C. Ellen attended Millikin University where she was part of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She met the love of her life, Clinton Louis Whitrock, in college and went on to marry him on December 31, 1955, in Arlington, VA.
They traveled the world together. During the earlier years of their marriage, they moved to Hong Kong for Clinton’s work at Caterpillar. During that time, Ellen learned how to translate writing into braille and earned many awards for her work. When they moved back to the United States, she became quite the seamstress concentrating on quilting.
Over the years, they traveled to many other places like India, Cambodia, Austria, New Zealand and Africa, where they went on Safari.
Ellen is survived by her husband; son, Cliff (Heidi) Whitrock; daughter, Tami (Michael) Lamb; brother, Drake DeGroot; sisters, Sara Urban, Louise DeGroot; grandchildren, Abagail, Katherine, David; great grandson, Oliver, and many extended family and friends.
Ellin was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jon DeGroot; sister, Joanne Loven.
