Mary Jane Baird's Obituary
Mary Jane (Traughber) Baird, born August 8, 1939, in Taylorville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025. She was the beloved daughter of Elmo and Mildred Traughber.
Jane’s life was marked by devotion to family, community, and a spirit of adventure. On October 23, 1957, she and her sweetheart, Bill Baird, eloped to Gainesville, Texas. In a moment that became a cherished family story, the judge paused a murder trial to call a recess and marry them. That day began a lifelong partnership filled with love, laughter, and enduring commitment. Jane and Bill shared 70 years together and were married just shy of 68 years, a testament to their enduring love.
Jane worked for many years at Frank’s IGA and County Market, where she was known for her kindness and dedication. Later, she joined her husband Bill at Shelter Insurance, where they worked side by side for 26 years, building lasting relationships with their community and clients.
She was also deeply involved int he Women of the Moose, Chapter 1263, where she held numerous titles over the years. Among her honors were the Green Cap, Star Recorder, and the highest distinction of all—the College of Regents Red Stole. Her leadership and service within the Moose Lodge reflected her lifelong commitment to fellowship, tradition, and helping others.
Jane is survived by her children: Bonnie (Dave) of Avon, Indiana; Jeff (Susie) and Janis of Taylorville and daughter-in-law Kayla of Morrisonville, Illinois. She leaves behind a cherished legacy through her 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmo and Mildred Traughber; her beloved husband, Bill (October 4, 2025); and her son, James (September 15, 2023).
She will be remembered for her warmth, her dedication to those she loved, and the joy she brought to every gathering.
A memorial service will be held after the new year.
