Mary Ellen Bernotas' Obituary
Mary Ellen Bernotas, 83, of Decatur, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at her home.
Mary Ellen was born August 6, 1924, in Springfield, the daughter of Harry B. and Georgia Elizabeth Murphy Thompson. She worked for Franklin Life in Springfield for several years before going to work at Sears where she was department manager before she retired in 1981. She was a member of St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church, U of I Home Extension, AARP, and St. Mary’s Auxiliary. Mary Ellen was a very active and caring person in the community. She volunteered for many organizations and served on many committees’ in Decatur through out her life. Mary Ellen loved to play bridge and was in several bridge clubs. She also loved to travel and spend time with her many friends who she loved deeply. Mary Ellen married Vetout C. Bernotas October 19, 1946 and he preceded her in death in 1993.
She is survived by her children: Pam Rand Ashenbremer of Sacramento, CA, Penny Roger Moore of Springfield, and Pat Alisa Bernotas of Kokomo, IN; grandchildren: Meagan Bob, Ian, Jeremy, Maribeth, Halley Adam and Hannah; great-grandchildren: Griffen, Hayden, and Haleigh; several nieces, nephews, and friends
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am, Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at St. Thomas The Apostle Catholic Church. Visitation will be 3 to 6 pm, Monday, March 3, 2008 at the Moran & Goebel Funeral Home, vigil prayer service at 5:30 pm. Burial will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery at a later date.
