Mary Lucille Stengel Dempsey, 101, of Decatur, died on Tuesday, December 09, 2003 in Decatur Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be 11:15 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2003 in St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fr. Jeff Grant celebrant. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday in Moran & Goebel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials to: St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Mary was born on January 08, 1902 on a farm near Illiopolis, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Mooney Stengel. She attended Leonard School, a country school near Illiopolis and after graduating from high school, Mary moved to Decatur where she attended business college. She was employed briefly until her marriage and after that was a housewife. She was a faithful member of St. Patrick Catholic Church for over 80 years, and the Catholic Daughter's of America. Mary married Orville E. Dempsey in 1926 and he preceded her in death on September 21, 1986.
She leaves two nephews: Lynn Edward Stengel, wife Lisa of Sheboygan, WI; Jack Stengel, wife Pam of Algonquin; two nieces: Colleen "Carroll" Hensel, husband Pete of Millstadt; Mary Lynn Stengel Ducey of Springfield; 10 great nephews; 3 great nieces; 1 great-great nephew; 1 great-great niece. She also leaves her dear friends, the Pickett family of Decatur, and Bill and Marilyn Weber of Illiopolis,
Her parents, husband, two brothers, and two sisters preceded her in death.
The family wishes to thank and express their grateful appreciation to all those who gave her such splendid medical care, love and happiness, including Dr. Totel, the staff members of Decatur Memorial Hospital, and the wonderful nurses in the continuing care unit there. The family also appreciates the prayers and visits of Fr. Don Wolford, Fr. Jeff Grant and Dan Verhasselt and the members of St. Patrick's Church who remembered her not only in their prayers but also in the many cards and notes sent through the years that she enjoyed. The family especially wishes to thank her caretakers and friends, Doris, Lou, Pam and Eric who through the many years she resided at Decatur Memorial Hospital brought her companionship, happiness, love and attention that made the final years of her life so full and meaningful.
