Mary Haskell's Obituary
Mary Margaret Ann Haskell was born in Chicago, IL on December 6th, 1937 to Mary Olga and John Heger. She married Jack Haskell on August 28th 1954 and they later divorced.
Mary or Peggy as she was also known, graduated from Decatur Memorial’s nursing program in 1979. She pursued a Bachelor’s degree and graduated from College of St Francis in 1986. She worked as a registered nurse at both Decatur Memorial Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital. She worked night shift so would be available to attend all the extracurricular activities of her kids and grandkids. Even though she was able to retire from the hospital, she missed nursing and worked as a school nurse for a few hours each week until she ultimately retired.
Peggy had 5 children; Jack (Judy) of Decatur, IL, Mike (Beth) of Decatur, IL, Brian of Greenville, SC, Mark (Christine Patch) of Decatur, IL, and Mary (JD) Royce, Mechanicsburg, IL. She had several grandchildren; Jennifer (Todd) Wangler Naples, FL, Jamie (Mitch) Cross of Decatur, IL, Jodi (Nehemiah Bates) of Decatur, IL, Julie of Decatur, IL, Josh (Ashley) of Sherman, IL, Joe (Brooke) of Blue Mound, IL, Justin of Decatur, IL, Jeremy of Decatur, IL, Jarod (Katie) of Danville, IN, and Evan (Summer Harrison) of Fairmont, WV. She also had several great-grandchildren who lovingly called her “Gigi”; Jackson, Cooper and Addison, Iris and Averi, Mia, Rylan and Charlotte, Mallory, Hannah, Jayson, Trinity, and Braelynn, Brooke, Ezra and Rory, Kaydence, Mason and James. She also had one sister Norma Jean Jacobs and one brother John Heger. She was preceded in death by her parents.
You could always find Peggy at a sporting event. From her grandkids, to her son Jack’s sports teams, she would always be there cheering them on from the sidelines. She was an avid Cardinals baseball fan and loved to watch the games on TV. She loved to travel and took the grandkids on many adventures to Six Flags and St. Louis. She traveled to Europe and although not as frequently as she wanted, to Canada to visit family. If anyone mentioned going on a trip, she would always ask ‘are you taking me?” She loved to shop and the family would joke that if you ever needed anything you could call her and she would go downstairs and see if she had what you needed and if she didn’t would shop for it. She loved the music of the Eagles and went to at least 3 concerts. She knew the words to every song and would sing right along with the band. She made the best rolls and cherry cheesecakes that will be missed and could prep and cook a whole Thanksgiving meal for the entire family all by herself. She loved her animals; Lacey and Jesse her dogs who preceded her in death and her 2 cats George and Wilbur.
The family would like to thank Dr Dean Davis and his whole office and the compassionate nurses and staff at Memorial Hospice. The family would also like to thank Sandra, Lisa and Sharon who provided companionship and care for Peggy.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in memory of Mary to Leia’s Hope Canine Rescue at leiashope.org.
